The Malayalee genius, who proved Albert Einstein the greatest physicist of all time, wrong (in his assertion that ‘nothing can move faster than light ) Dr. E. C. G. Sudarshan (Ennackal Chandy George Sudarshan) is no more. Sudarshan proved particles called tachyons can travel faster than light.
I remember vividly my interview with him in early 1980s which turned out to be a breeze, in spite of the consternation, one with a mere Physics degree had, to face a top global theoretical physicist. Thanks to him a simple human being, it turned out to be an unforgettable experience, always to cherish. On holiday from Texas, he was the guest of then home minister Vayalar Ravi, staying at his official residence.
(The interview ‘The first probable Malayalee Nobel laureate’ was published in -Malayala Manorama Sunday Pages)
I curiously listened him explaining his research on particles faster than light ‘tachyons’ quoting from Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan “ഒന്നായ നിന്നെയിഹ രണ്ടെന്നു കണ്ടളവില് ഉണ്ടായോരിണ്ടല് ബത മിണ്ടാവതല്ല മമ….” ( My salutations to that Narayana, With a request from humble self, To make me see him as one reality) sonorously. His point was this:Ezhuthachan was an easier option to explain this complex concept in Physics because the problem of dichotomy.
Ezhuthachan also was grappling with, from the point of view of metaphysics, is the same as a physicist. The hard core theoritical physicist was an out and out cultural person, quite at ease as a ‘Mundu’ clad Malayalee.
Sudarshan never got the Nobel prize because the time and resource consuming ritual of lobbying was alien to him. But the ones who stood on his shoes were able to get the coveted prize!
RIP Dr. E. C. G. Sudarshan
